What Zatoichi: Darkness Is His Ally Is About
Ichi has aged and is still on the road. A blind masseur who wants a quiet life and would rather not draw his sword, he arrives at a village and lands in the middle of a fight between two yakuza families. The villagers are being crushed between them. Ichi tries to stay out of it and in the end has to draw. As always in the series he says little, waits a long time, and then it is over in a moment. It is the twenty-sixth film in the Zatoichi series; Shintarō Katsu returned to the part and to directing after sixteen years. A serious accident occurred during filming: on 26 December 1988 a real sword was used in a fight scene and the actor Yukio Katō was wounded in the neck and died. The police treated it as professional negligence causing death.
