What Zelary Is About

Eliška works as a nurse; her medical studies stopped when the Germans closed the universities. She is in the resistance along with her lover, the surgeon Richard. When the group is exposed Richard flees and Eliška has nowhere left to hide. A patient whose life she once saved agrees to conceal her in his mountain village, as his wife. She lands inside a way of life that stopped a hundred and fifty years ago. Ondřej Trojan's film was nominated for the Academy Award for best foreign language film in 2004, with Anna Geislerová as Eliška and György Cserhalmi as her husband. It runs two and a half hours and tells the war from a village in the mountains rather than from the front.
