What Toman Is About
Zdenek Toman ran Czechoslovak intelligence between 1945 and 1948, a politician driven by ambition rather than conscience and a businessman mixed up in disreputable dealings. The same man built the route that allowed Jewish refugees from Eastern Europe to get out after the war; some accounts credit him with saving hundreds and others with saving thousands, and the film refuses to flatten that doubleness into a single verdict. Ondrej Trojan’s hundred and forty five minute period drama treats the label of the Czech Schindler as a question that has to be answered rather than as praise handed over in advance. The Czech Slovak co-production opened in the Czech Republic on 4 October 2018, with Jiri Machacek in the lead and Katerina Winterova, Stanislav Majer and Kristyna Bokova in support.
