What Zoo Is About
This 2005 Japanese anthology takes five stories by the writer Otsuichi and gives each to a different director, four in live action and one animated. In the title piece a woman’s death is told under strange conditions; in Kazari and Yoko twin sisters are treated in opposite ways; in Seven Rooms two siblings find themselves shut in; in When the Sun Shines a survivor is taught something about living and dying; and in So Far a mother and father lose the ability to see each other. Otsuichi wrote the scripts himself, and his horror is built far more out of loss and pain than out of violence, which is where the collection takes its tone from.
