Eva Marie Saint came into cinema as Edie Doyle in Elia Kazan's On the Waterfront and won the supporting actress Oscar with her first film. Until then she had worked only on the stage and in television, and she was hired just before shooting began. Kazan had cast the film largely from the members of The Actors Studio, which he had helped to found. Five years later, in Hitchcock's North by Northwest, she played Eve Kendall, the woman close to Vandamm, in a story that opens with Roger Thornhill, an advertising man played by Cary Grant, being taken for a spy under a mistaken identity; MGM had put Cyd Charisse forward for the part but Hitchcock preferred Saint. Otto Preminger's Exodus and John Frankenheimer's Grand Prix round out her entries.
