What The Stalking Moon Is About

Sam Varner, a cavalry scout close to retirement, finds a white woman living among a group of Apaches he is escorting to a reservation. Sarah Carver was taken ten years ago and has a son by her captor. Varner agrees to take the two of them to his ranch in New Mexico, and Salvaje, the boy's father, follows them while almost never appearing on screen. Robert Mulligan builds the film out of waiting rather than gunfire, keeping the danger just outside the frame. Adapted from T. V. Olsen's 1965 novel, it reunited Mulligan and Gregory Peck for the first time since To Kill a Mockingbird.
