What Fear Strikes Out Is About
The true story of Jimmy Piersall: an athlete who grew up under an overbearing father, reached the major leagues in baseball and broke down there. Robert Mulligan's 1957 film speaks directly about what success costs and about the weight a father's expectation leaves in a child. Anthony Perkins plays the player and Karl Malden the father. For a Hollywood picture in 1957 to talk this openly about mental health was unusual. Perkins's fragility is already visible here; the part he took three years later would carry him somewhere else entirely.
