What Up the Down Staircase Is About
Sylvia Barrett arrives as a novice teacher to teach English at a New York high school. What she finds is an indifferent staff room, students left to themselves, and an administration that buries everyone in paperwork. As the days pass things do not get easier but harder. Sylvia keeps trying to reach the students in the worst trouble. Robert Mulligan's film was adapted from Bel Kaufman's 1965 novel and shot on location in New York, with real high school students playing most of the student parts. Sandy Dennis plays Sylvia. The film does not declare the teacher a saviour; it shows that the system cannot be repaired by one person's good intentions. For a picture from 1967 it is more honest than most school films.
