John Travolta's career was built from nothing twice over. Saturday Night Fever made him a star overnight in 1977 and Grease doubled that the next year, its soundtrack selling in millions on the strength of the songs he sang with Olivia Newton-John. Then came a long decline: the 1983 sequel to Saturday Night Fever did not take, and the films after it did not either. He returned to his old place only in 1994, with Pulp Fiction, the hitman's part Quentin Tarantino gave him bringing an Oscar nomination. After that he worked in action productions like Face/Off. He had entered cinema before any of it, in 1976, with a small part in Carrie, so the stardom, the decline and the return all came one after another inside a single career.
