What Urban Cowboy Is About
A young refinery worker in Texas spends his evenings at an enormous bar where riding the mechanical bull becomes a question of identity. The film argues that being a cowboy is now a costume rather than a job, and it does so without passing judgement. John Travolta's character is not likeable: jealous, quick to anger, unfair to his wife, and the film does not correct him. The bull scenes are shot as spectacle over a bitter idea, that the danger has been made adjustable. The music and bar footage are among the period's best.
