Laura Linney plays Kinsey's wife Mac in Bill Condon's Kinsey. Both pages that carry her name are Film of the Month pieces. The one on Kinsey finds her excellent in the thinner part but also writes that she is hidden under an awful wig. That same piece offers a scene of hers as an example of the screenplay's economy: her character slips a single word into the conversation, engineering, and so reminds her husband of the only field his father counted worth anything. The piece on The Squid and the Whale has her as the Brooklyn mother announcing the separation to her two sons. In Terence Davies's The House of Mirth she plays Bertha Dorset. Independent Spirit nominated her twice for best female lead, once in 2001 with You Can Count on Me and once in 2006 with The Squid and the Whale. The award went to another actress both times, first to Ellen Burstyn and then to Felicity Huffman.
