What The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin Is About
Armistead Maupin came out of a conservative Old South family, went to Vietnam as a young man, and worked for a time for Jesse Helms, before settling in San Francisco and writing Tales of the City, becoming a voice that told generations of readers to claim their own lives. Jennifer M. Kroot’s documentary lets Maupin narrate that turn himself, without tidying the earlier part away. Laura Linney, Olympia Dukakis, Ian McKellen and Neil Gaiman are among the people talking. The passage everyone remembers is the reading of Michael Tolliver’s letter to his mother, printed in the newspaper in 1977, spoken here in turns by several voices at once.
