Weighing the film he has in hand, Richard Kelly sets up Jim Sheridan's In the Name of the Father as the standard and gives that film a two-sided verdict: it was studio-polished to just the same degree and careless with its facts, and it worked anyway. The reason, for Kelly, lies in the protagonist, since Gerry Conlon looked like an ordinary man, a bit of a fool, the sort who will always turn up in the wrong place. The hero of the film he is reviewing being plainly extraordinary, the same route fails there. In the Name of the Father won the Golden Bear at the 1994 Berlinale, an award the records hold as given to the film with his name on it as director. Film Independent's directing nominees for 2004 took him in as well, on In America.
