What The Field Is About
Bull McCabe's family has worked the same field for generations, clearing its stones and effectively making its soil, and yet the field is not theirs. When the widow who owns it puts it up for auction nobody local dares bid against him, and then a wealthy American arrives who wants to build a road across it. Jim Sheridan's adaptation of John B. Keane's play refuses to romanticise love of the land: what Bull has is an obsession with possession, and his son pays for it first. Richard Harris was nominated for the best actor Oscar, with John Hurt and Sean Bean alongside him.
