What The Boxer Is About
A boxer comes home to Belfast after fourteen years inside and tries to reopen a gym that refuses to take sides. The trouble is not in the ring. In a city where everyone is expected to belong to something, a room that excludes nobody reads as a provocation. This is the third film Jim Sheridan and Daniel Day-Lewis made together and the quietest of them, with Day-Lewis acting mostly through posture and restraint. The hardest knot is Maggie, whose husband is still imprisoned and whose waiting the community treats as a duty rather than a choice.
