Director
Rian Johnson
9 films · 1 series
Brick is the first feature Rian Johnson directed. Hannah McGill's piece in the archive counts it a striking debut and turns attention to the film's language: the jargon the high-schoolers speak sounds as though it had come straight off the pages of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler. McGill ties that to the structure the film builds, telling the closed intensity of high-school society as a harsh film noir mystery.
