What 137 Shots Is About
On the night of 29 November 2012, at the end of a chase that ran twenty-two miles across Cleveland, thirteen officers fired a hundred and thirty-seven rounds into the car carrying Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams. Both were killed, and no weapon and no shell casings were found in the car. Michael Brelo fired forty-nine of those rounds himself, fifteen of them standing on the bonnet and shooting down through the windscreen; he was tried and acquitted in 2015. Michael Milano’s documentary follows the trial, the people of Cleveland demanding accountability, and the Justice Department’s findings about the city’s police department. Samaria Rice, Tamir Rice’s mother, is among those who speak.
