What 14 Kilometers Is About
In Niger, Buba, who dreams of becoming a footballer, and his brother Mukela set out for Europe; in Mali, Violeta runs from home because she is to be married to a man much older than she is. The three cross paths in the Sahara and start moving through the same desert in the back of the same truck. Along the road there are smugglers, borders, thirst and detentions, and reaching the fourteen kilometres of strait that divide Europe from Africa is only the last step of it. Gerardo Olivares’s ninety five minute Spanish film was shot in Niger, Morocco and Spain and played by non-professional actors.
