Gabriele Ferzetti T Tommaso Olivieri What 18 Years Later Is About
Mirko and Genziano are brothers in their mid thirties who have not seen each other in eighteen years. The distance dates from the day their mother died in an accident they were both part of. Genziano went to Britain and became a stockbroker; Mirko stayed in Rome running the family's failing shop. When their father dies, his will puts the two of them in the same car: they are to drive his ashes to a village in Calabria, to the place where it happened. Edoardo Leo's first feature is a road film that refuses to get sentimental; the longer the brothers are forced to talk, the further the old account opens. The car is a character in its own right and barely survives the trip. It argues that being someone's brother is less about forgiving them than about putting up with them.
