1968

The AEK basketball team, founded in 1924 by refugees from Constantinople, beat Slavia of Prague forty four years later and won Greece its first European cup. The match was played at the Panathenaic Stadium on 4 April 1968 in front of close to eighty thousand people, setting a world record for attendance. Tasos Boulmetis uses that night not as a sports story but as a way of describing the political and social condition of a country living through the first year of the military junta, with the personal histories of the players on the court forming part of the same account. The ninety three minute Greek production was finished a year earlier but held back to 2018 so that it would fall on the fiftieth anniversary of the game.
