What 20,000 Species of Bees Is About
An eight-year-old spends the summer in the Basque Country with a mother and a grandmother. Everyone uses the name given at birth and the child does not want it; the child is a girl and does not know how to say so. The mother has lost her own work, her marriage is ending and she is at odds with her own mother. In her first film Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren does not treat the subject as an issue; what the child wants is clear from the start and the film watches how three generations of the family respond. The great-aunt who keeps bees is the calmest and most understanding figure. Sofía Otero won the acting bear in Berlin for the part, the youngest performer to take it. Who it is for: viewers who like quiet family drama and stories about trans children. Who it is not for: anyone expecting dramatic conflict.
