22 Female Kottayam

Aashiq Abu's 2012 Malayalam film follows a young nurse working in Bangalore. Tessa is deceived by her boyfriend, sexually assaulted by his employer and eventually imprisoned. When she gets out she decides to settle the account. The film is regarded as a turning point in Malayalam cinema. A woman's agency had not been constructed this openly within a revenge narrative, and one scene in the second half was discussed for a long time afterwards. Rima Kallingal's performance leaves the character as neither a victim nor a simple avenger. The telling does not aestheticise violence; the assault is not shown directly, but its consequences are never softened. The boyfriend played by Fahadh Faasil differs from the genre's usual villain: ordinary, cowardly and believable. Who it's for: those who like woman-centred narratives in Malayalam cinema and the revenge genre. Who it's not for: viewers who want to avoid sexual assault and retaliatory violence; the film places both at its centre.
