What 23 Paces to Baker Street Is About
Philip Hannon, a blind playwright living in London, catches part of a conversation at the next table in a bar and decides it is a plan to abduct a child. When the police will not take him seriously he runs his own investigation with his manservant and his former fiancee, working only from the voices he heard and the details he retained. The good idea in the film is making his blindness both the obstacle and the method. Henry Hathaway shot it in London for the wide screen. Its final passage in the dark comes well before the later films with similar scenes.
