The scientist Sethuraman builds a watch that controls time: whoever uses it can go back within a twenty four hour window. His twin brother Athreya wants it and kills him. Before he dies Sethuraman puts the watch in a box and gives it to his wife. Years later his son Mani works as a watch repairer and finds his father's box. Athreya is out of prison and looking for it. Vikram Kumar writes and directs. Suriya plays all three parts: Sethuraman, Athreya and Mani. Samantha and Nithya Menen are in the cast. The music is by A. R. Rahman. The idea is a governed use of time. What the watch can and cannot do is defined at the start and the narrative keeps to those rules, which is uncommon in mainstream Indian cinema. Suriya separates the three parts by posture and speed of speech alone; Athreya in particular was praised. It was shot simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu and did well commercially. Its limit is length and the romantic line; the narrative abandons the science fiction idea in the middle and returns to genre. Who it is for: viewers who like Indian science fiction and narratives about time. Who it is not for: it is long, the second half slows, and the songs interrupt the narrative.
