What -30- Is About

The film takes its title from the mark that shows the end of a story in journalism. It is set on the night shift of a newspaper in Los Angeles. The night managing editor, Sam Gatlin, comes in during the afternoon and works through until morning. Beside him is the night city editor. Several lines run at once across the shift: a girl is trapped in a sewer, there is a death in the family, and a running bet goes on in the office. Gatlin’s own marriage is inside the same night. The film is about the shift itself more than about any plot. The work was loosely based on a Los Angeles paper that has since closed. Jack Webb both directs and takes the lead, with William Conrad also in the cast. The ninety six minute American film was completed in 1959.
