What A Boy Called Sailboat Is About
A Hispanic family living in a town in the American southwest where drought has dried everything out. They call the small son of the house Sailboat, and there is something about him everyone notices. One day the boy comes into possession of a tiny guitar and writes a song; he plays it for nobody outside his family, and yet everyone who hears it cannot let it go. Cameron Nugent keeps the film somewhere between fable and reality. What the song does to people grows and grows and travels well beyond the town, but the film never turns that into a miracle show and prefers to stay in the family's small room. J.K. Simmons and Jake Busey are in the cast, though it is the boy playing Sailboat who carries the film. A dry, quiet, unusually gentle piece of work.
