What happens when a person dies and nobody is left behind. This documentary follows the office in Los Angeles that does that work: finding the body, establishing the identity, searching for relatives, clearing the home, selling the belongings, and finally burial or cremation. Some cases take years. Directed together by Grover Babcock and Blue Hadaegh, the film uses no narration, no music and no interviews. The camera records only the people doing the work and the process itself. The telling never reaches for emotional leverage; it neither judges anyone nor asks for pity. That measured look makes the film harder to watch and also makes it respectful. It took a documentary special jury prize at Sundance.
