Gérard Blain drew most of this film from his own childhood. It begins in 1937 and runs into the Occupation, following Paul, a boy whose father walks out and whose home gives him nothing, sent away to boarding school and left to look for affection wherever the war happens to put him. The adults he meets, several men and a woman, exploit that need in a child nowhere near old enough to consent. He ends up answering an advertisement for film extras and holding on to the edge of the industry. Blain said the film mixed things he had lived with things he had not, and spoke openly about what had happened to him as a young teenager. What it tracks from beginning to end is how completely neglect leaves a child exposed.
