What A Chinese Ghost Story: The Tsui Hark Animation Is About
Ning travels around China collecting debts. When he ends up in a city full of ghosts he falls in love with one of them. But two ghostbusters have descended on the place, both trying to clear the city and to finish each other off at the same time, and Ning is caught between them. The story comes from Pu Songling's classic collection of strange tales; this is the animated version of the famous film Tsui Hark produced a decade earlier. Tsui Hark wrote and produced this one too, Andrew Chen directed it, and a Japanese studio handled the animation. It holds the eerie and the comic in the same scene, and it was the most ambitious thing Hong Kong animation attempted at the time.
