What A Christmas Tale Is About
The Vuillards gather at the family house in Roubaix for Christmas, but the occasion is not the holiday. Junon needs a bone marrow transplant and the donor has to come from inside the family. The house was built on a death already: the first child, Joseph, died of the same illness, and nobody ever filled that space. Years ago Elizabeth had her brother Henri legally banished, and his marrow is the match. Desplechin refuses melodrama, using asides to camera and stage curtains to argue that being saved does not require being loved.
