What The Life of the Dead Is About
A young woman travels to a provincial town to join the extended family gathering near the hospital where her cousin lies in a coma after trying to kill himself. They wait in the corridor, in houses, in kitchens; not one of them entirely likes another, and all of them are there. The longer the wait goes on, the further the subject drifts from the patient towards the family. Arnaud Desplechin's first film, a medium-length piece of fifty-three minutes. It is about how a crowded family talks, argues and fails to keep quiet around somebody who is dying. Marianne Denicourt, Thibault de Montalembert and Laurence Côte, faces we would go on seeing in Desplechin films for years, are together here for the first time.
