Joachim Salinger What Kings & Queen Is About
The film runs two stories side by side and they barely meet. On one side is Nora, who runs a gallery: shortly before her wedding she learns her father is terminally ill and has to think about her son's future. On the other is her former lover Ismael, committed to a psychiatric hospital against his will, in debt, chaotic and funny. One is tragedy and the other farce, and Arnaud Desplechin keeps both inside one film. Mathieu Amalric won a Cesar for playing Ismael. A hundred and fifty minutes, at times unruly, with the second story holding it up.
