What A Diving Bomber Chronicle Is About
The film tells the last three days of the crew of a Soviet dive bomber during the Second World War. All three are around twenty and had other lives before the war: one was a school teacher, one a musician, one a painter. The film shows them not as heroes but as three young men joking among themselves, bored, waiting before a flight, and gathers its real weight in those daily moments. What the mission is and how it will end are clear from the start, but the film chooses to describe the three days rather than the outcome. Gennady Sayfulin and Oleg Dal appear in Naum Birman’s seventy eight minute Soviet film; it was completed in 1968.
