What A Girl in Every Port Is About
This silent Howard Hawks picture opens with two sailors moving from port to port. At first they are rivals, chasing the same women and spoiling each other's chances. Then they fight their way into a friendship, and the film finds its real subject, the one Hawks would return to all his life: loyalty between two men and the moment that loyalty is tested. The test arrives when one of them decides to settle down and meets a mysterious woman. It is one of Louise Brooks's American roles before she left for Europe, with Victor McLaglen and Robert Armstrong as the pair. The telling rests on movement and on looks rather than on dialogue.
