What A Gorgeous Girl Like Me Is About
A Gorgeous Girl Like Me followed the commercial and critical failure of Truffaut's previous film, The Two English Girls, which had demoralized him; in response he swung the opposite direction, making what he called a mocking comic thriller, his first outright comedy. The screenplay is adapted from Henry Farrell's 1967 English language novel, one of the rare Truffaut films drawn from an English source. The film drew 684,919 admissions in France, so it wasn't a total box office collapse but was overshadowed by Truffaut's more serious films. Who it's for: anyone curious about a deliberate pivot after a previous failure, the director's first outright comedy in his career. Who it's not for: viewers wanting Truffaut's serious, dramatic films, since this is a deliberately mocking and provocative comedy.
