A Long Way to Come Home

Angga Dwimas Sasongko's 2023 Indonesian film follows Aurora, who has moved to London. She left her country for a career, but the cost of living far from family is heavy. Old matters between her and her siblings do not close despite the distance. Silence between the siblings is at the centre. Each remembers an event in the family differently and nobody speaks about it openly. The narrative moves between London and Jakarta; migration is not the film's subject but is felt in every scene. Sheila Dara Aisha's performance carries it. Sasongko's direction is measured; there are no big confrontation scenes and the tension gathers instead at dinner tables and in phone calls. Some sections run long and the pace drops. Who it's for: those who like family reckonings and migrant stories. Who it's not for: viewers waiting for incident; there is little dramatic development and the resolution stays partial.
