Coffee Philosophy

Angga Dwimas Sasongko's 2015 Indonesian film follows a coffee shop in debt. One partner thinks about the business, the other is a talented but arrogant barista, and a wager made with a wealthy entrepreneur puts the shop's future at risk. The wager is to make a perfect cup. The pair travel to different parts of the country in pursuit of it; the narrative places coffee production and the condition of the growers inside the journey. It is adapted from a short story. Chicco Jerikho and Rio Dewanto lead. The narrative ties the tension between the partners to their personal past; the tone is light and the cinematography stands out. Who it's for: those who like Indonesian drama and road films. Who it's not for: viewers expecting dense plotting; the film proceeds largely through the relationship between two people.
