What A Man Called Adam Is About
Adam Johnson is a gifted jazz cornetist, but ill health, racism, drink and his own temper pull his life apart, and the heaviest weight on him is guilt over the deaths of his wife and child. When he meets Claudia, who works in the civil rights movement, he tries to settle down, but it does not last, and an outburst against his agent gets him shut out of the clubs. In Leo Penn’s ninety nine minute American film, Sammy Davis Jr. plays Adam, Cicely Tyson plays Claudia and Louis Armstrong plays Willie, her grandfather and a well known trumpeter, with Frank Sinatra Jr. and Ossie Davis also in the cast. Benny Carter wrote the score, Nat Adderley played the trumpet parts, and the film was completed in 1966.
