What A Man Called Peter Is About
The young Scot Peter Marshall wants only one thing, to go to sea, but he comes to believe he has received a call to the ministry and the direction of his life changes. He leaves Scotland for America, works in a few small congregations and is then given the pulpit of the church of the presidents in Washington, finally becoming chaplain to the Senate. The film tells his preaching, his marriage and the illness that came to him early, all together. Henry Koster’s hundred and nineteen minute American production was adapted from the biography Marshall’s widow Catherine wrote in 1951; Richard Todd plays Marshall and Jean Peters plays Catherine, in what became her last feature film. It opened on 31 March 1955, did well at the box office and was nominated for an Academy Award for its colour cinematography.
