What A Man from the Boulevard des Capucines Is About
Known in Russian as Chelovek s bulvara Kaputsinov, A Man from the Boulevard des Capucines is a Western parody that drew sixty million viewers in the Soviet Union in 1987, making it the year's most watched film. Andrey Mironov plays Mr. Johnny First, who introduces the art of cinema to the wild west town of Santa Carolina and tries to "tame" its people with Chaplin style silent films, in what's been described as a postmodern genre parody inspired by Mel Brooks's Blazing Saddles. Who it's for: anyone curious about Soviet cinema parodying the Hollywood western in its own voice, in one of the most popular films of its era. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a serious, classic western, since the film is openly poking fun at the genre itself.
