Shōhei Imamura's 1967 film starts from the Japanese phenomenon of johatsu: people who disappear without leaving a trace. The crew picks one name from the list, a plastics salesman who vanished after embezzling from his company. Together with his fiancée Yoshie they begin searching for him, and the camera follows that search. But as the film goes on the missing man recedes and the real subject becomes the documentary itself: does a camera help find a person, or does it build the story around them. Imamura blurs that boundary deliberately, and does it more than once.
