What Stolen Desire Is About
A travelling theatre troupe moves from town to town, and to make a living it plays scenes from the classical repertoire and strip shows one after another in the same evening. Inside the company quarrels over money, love affairs and jealousies run together; the life outside the order of the stage is more tangled than what is played on it. The film does not look down on these people; it seats poverty and art at the same table and finds both the comic and the painful there. It is the director’s first feature length film. The account puts at its centre not the performance itself but what happens once it is over. Hiroyuki Nagato and Yoko Minamida appear in Shohei Imamura’s ninety two minute Japanese film, completed in 1958.
