What Endless Desire Is About

In post war Japan a group of four men and one woman meets in the cellar of a butcher’s shop. Their aim is to dig up a cache of morphine buried there during the war. As the digging drags on the relations among them break down; each begins calculating what the others are thinking, and the group is reduced one by one. The film tells this not as suspense but with a bitter humour; what it really shows is what people do to one another in a time of scarcity. It is one of Imamura’s early works. Hiroyuki Nagato and Misako Watanabe appear in Shohei Imamura’s hundred and one minute Japanese film, completed in 1958.
