What A Colt Is My Passport Is About
A Colt Is My Passport is a yakuza film directed by Takashi Nomura for the Nikkatsu studio, based on a work by crime writer Shinji Fujiwara, whose writing also inspired Shohei Imamura's Intentions of Murder. Composer Harumi Ibe's score, built on guitar, harmonica, and whistling, echoes Ennio Morricone's work for Sergio Leone, so closely that some critics have written it could be transplanted into a spaghetti western without changing the plot. Joe Shishido has named this film his personal favorite among the roles he played during his Nikkatsu years. Who it's for: anyone curious about one of Japanese cinema's strongest fusions of American noir and Italian spaghetti western style. Who it's not for: viewers used to a conventional Japanese dramatic tone, since the film deliberately mimics Western genre conventions.
