What A Simple Heart Is About
Felicite, a plain and kind hearted maid who cannot forget her first love, gives herself entirely to Mathilde Aubain, the mistress of the house where she now works. Time passes but her wound does not close, and she begins to give her affection to everyone around her: the children of the house, her nephew Victor, and at last an animal she takes in. But nothing comes back; life brings her another loss each time. Even so she does not give up looking for someone who will accept her unconditional love. The film neither asks pity for that persistence nor exalts it, and reads the tie between service and affection through class as well. Sandrine Bonnaire plays the lead in Marion Laine’s hundred and five minute French film, completed in 2008.
