What A Song for Martin Is About
Martin, a conductor and composer, meets Barbara, a concertmaster, at one of his performances, and they fall in love and leave their marriages to build a life together. Five years on Martin starts forgetting and confusing things, and the diagnosis is Alzheimer’s. Barbara does everything she can while the illness turns him angry and at times violent towards her. Bille August adapted Ulla Isaksson’s autobiographical novel of 1994. Sven Wollter and Viveka Seldahl, who play Martin and Barbara, were married in life, and both won Sweden’s national film award for these performances. The film follows the illness from beginning to end without once looking away.
