A small boy is working out how to get along with the man who enters his life when his mother remarries. He calls his stepfather by his surname, Korostelev, and in time the man becomes his closest friend and helps him with problems that are small to adults and enormous to him. Georgiy Daneliya and Igor Talankin made their directing debut with it, from Vera Panova’s book of the same name. The story runs at the level the child understands rather than an adult’s, and manages to be neither pitying nor sentimental. It won the Crystal Globe at Karlovy Vary in 1960 and was voted the best Soviet film of the year.
