What A Throw of Dice Is About
Two neighbouring kings addicted to gambling, Ranjit and his cousin Sohat, want the same woman: Sunita, daughter of the hermit Kanwa. Sohat cheats to win, using both the dice and the people around him. In the end a single throw arrives at the point where it decides the fate of two kingdoms and three people. The story is taken from an episode of the Mahabharata. Franz Osten's silent film was a German, Indian and British co-production, the last part of the trilogy he made with Himansu Rai. It was shot in Rajasthan with ten thousand extras, a thousand horses and dozens of elephants. Forgotten for many years, it was restored by the British Film Institute in 2006, and the new score Nitin Sawhney wrote for it was played for the first time in London in 2007, with an orchestra.
