What A Touch of Zen Is About
A poor painter in a provincial town encounters a mysterious woman hiding in an abandoned fort; she is the daughter of a general who fell to court intrigue, and imperial agents are hunting her. King Hu begins in the shape of a martial arts film and turns it into something else entirely as it proceeds, until in the final section the story attaches to Buddhist monks and to light, and the fight stops being physical. The night sequence in the fort and the duel in the bamboo grove are among the most imitated scenes in the genre. It runs over three hours and took years to shoot. It won a technical prize at Cannes in 1975 and made wuxia cinema internationally serious. Who it is for: viewers who like wuxia and long, formally ambitious films. Who it is not for: anyone expecting continuous action, since long stretches contain almost no fighting.
