What The Valiant Ones Is About
King Hu's 1975 Hong Kong film is set in the Ming dynasty of the sixteenth century. China's coastline is under raids from the pirates known as wokou, and a government official gathers a small band against them. At the centre of that band is a husband and wife who fight together. But the enemy in the film is not only the pirates; it is also the corrupt officials selling the operation from inside. Hu builds the sword sequences through editing here: which frame is cut and when matters as much as the movement itself. The film was considered lost for around twenty years until the Hong Kong Film Archive found a print in 1996.
